Barney Frank, the quick-witted Massachusetts Democratic congressman and liberal lion, has died at the age of 86. His sister confirmed his passing on Wednesday.

A leading liberal known for his acerbic wit and combative style, Frank led a sweeping overhaul of the financial industry. He crafted the most significant reforms to the financial system in a generation after the 2008 financial crisis and focused his work on marginalized communities. He was often voted the brainiest, funniest, and most eloquent member of the House.

Frank also made history as one of the first openly gay members of Congress. By being the first to come out voluntarily, he brought new visibility to gay rights and helped normalize being openly gay in public office.

The former congressman remained politically engaged until the end. Even while in hospice, Frank was actively working to spread the message of his forthcoming book, "The Hard Path to Unity: Why We Must Reform the Left to Rescue Democracy."
