Board of Peace blames Hamas for blocking Gaza progress; warns permanent divide

armed conflict

The lead envoy for Gaza warned the UN Security Council on Thursday that the enclave's current division could become permanent. This division would leave more than 2 million people crowded into less than half of the territory unless a ceasefire takes hold.

Despite an October ceasefire, Gaza remains gripped by daily violence. Reports indicate that ceasefire violations by both sides continue on a near daily basis, with Israeli strikes continuing as the military and Hamas accuse one another of violating the truce.

The body overseeing the U.S.-brokered ceasefire plans to ask the UN Security Council to press Hamas to disarm. The Security Council has been urged to press for both Hamas disarmament and the fulfillment of Israeli obligations under the Gaza ceasefire roadmap.
