British Columbia has declared a state of emergency as unprecedented, fast-moving wildfires tear through the province. Between 102 and 105 blazes are currently burning, with nearly half categorized as out of control. Many of these fires, including 78 that ignited within the past week, spread rapidly due to strong winds. Fires that erupted on Friday nearly doubled in size overnight into Saturday.
More than 20,000 people have been forced to abandon their homes and communities along Okanagan Lake in frantic evacuations. The Bald Range wildfire, which has burned more than 33,000 acres and remains out of control, triggered the largest evacuation event of the summer. Authorities have confirmed that a woman died while evacuating her home in southern British Columbia.
Canada's federal government has announced urgent assistance for the province, providing shelter and accommodation for residents displaced in regions around Summerland and Peachland. Firefighters continue to battle the blazes day and night, though breakneck speed continues to hamper their efforts.
