The Socceroos have secured a place in the World Cup knockout rounds for the third time in their history following a 0-0 draw against Paraguay. Playing in Santa Clara, on the south-eastern edge of the San Francisco Bay Area, Australia finished second in Group D with four points, trailing co-hosts the US.
While a much-changed Australia side controlled large parts of the match, the game lacked high distinction and saw long stretches without impetus, as both teams knew a draw would be enough to qualify for the last 32. Before the clash, head coach Tony Popovic insisted the team would go into the match to win, calling the prospect of reaching the knockout rounds a wonderful challenge.
The result guarantees the Socceroos a spot in the round of 32, where they will meet either Belgium, Egypt, Iran, or New Zealand. This achievement comes four years after Australia reached the last 16 in Qatar. The draw is also likely to be enough for Paraguay to advance.
