Police Scotland arrested a 36-year-old white Scottish man late Friday after reports of a series of violent attacks in Edinburgh. The incidents left five men injured, with reports indicating the suspect stabbed the victims.

An advocacy group and the organization Muslim Engagement and Development identified several of those injured as Muslims. Although counterterrorism authorities have stated that a motive for the attacks is so far unknown, the suspect purportedly shouted that he was protecting the country from Muslims when he was arrested.

Counter-terrorism police have taken charge of the investigation into the suspected anti-Muslim attacks in the Scottish capital.
