The UK government has quietly eased and delayed some sanctions on Russian oil to help Britons cope with rising costs resulting from the Iran war. As part of these measures, Britain has also temporarily loosened imports of liquefied natural gas from certain Russian plants.
The move effectively allows the UK to import diesel and jet fuel refined from Moscow’s crude oil in third countries, such as India and Turkiye. This decision was intended to prevent shortages of diesel and jet fuel.
The waiver reflects increasing supply concerns over certain fuels due to the effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The UK government has since apologized for its decision to loosen the sanctions.
