A federal judge on Wednesday blocked a new executive order from the Trump administration that sought to limit the number of people eligible for automatic birthright citizenship. The ruling temporarily prevents the administration from enforcing restrictions that would have stopped certain people from automatically becoming U.S. citizens at birth.
This latest effort follows a previous legal defeat. On June 30, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected the administration's initial attempt to end birthright citizenship in a 6-3 decision, ruling that the effort was illegal.
In reinforcing the constitutional right to birthright citizenship, the judge stated that the president's new carveouts to limit citizenship are almost certainly unconstitutional.
