Roberto Mancini returns as Italy coach for second time to rescue crisis-hit team

sports football

Federation president Giovanni Malagò announced on Tuesday that Roberto Mancini will return as Italy coach for a second spell. The appointment comes after days of controversy and debate, with the 61-year-old once again tasked with revitalizing an Italy team in crisis.

Mancini previously coached the national side from 2018 to 2023, during which he guided Italy to the European Championship title in 2021. However, the team has struggled in recent years, having missed out on the last three World Cups.

The nomination has not been unanimously cheered. Technical director Paolo Maldini, who reportedly threatened to resign if Mancini was appointed, has been replaced by Claudio Ranieri.
