Iranian Soccer Players Withdraw Asylum Claims in Australia

Five members of the Iranian women’s soccer team have withdrawn their asylum claims in Australia and are rejoining the squad in Malaysia. This leaves only two players and one support staff member remaining in Australia after initially seven sought refuge following the Women’s Asian Cup. The initial concerns arose after players did not sing the national anthem, leading to accusations of being “traitors” and fears of persecution upon return to Iran. However, several have since decided to leave Australia, with the team now unable to immediately return to Tehran due to ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Despite reports of pressure from Iranian authorities and claims of “psychological warfare,” officials state the players appear to be in good spirits. The team is currently seeking alternative destinations from Kuala Lumpur, while those remaining in Australia continue to be supported by the Australian government.
