WHO declares deadly MV Hondius cruise ship hantavirus outbreak over

health diseases

The World Health Organization has declared the hantavirus outbreak linked to the cruise ship MV Hondius over. The announcement comes after the final identified contact of an exposed person completed their quarantine period on July 2 and tested negative for the virus.

The outbreak was caused by the Andes virus, a rare rodent-borne hantavirus strain that typically circulates in Argentina and Chile. The MV Hondius had departed from Argentina on April 1.

The virus infected 13 people and killed three, triggering a global health alert and a race to identify the origin of the virus.
