Samsung Q2 profit jumps to record on global AI boom

Samsung Electronics reported a record operating profit of 89.5 trillion won ($62 billion) for the April-June second quarter. The company's operating profit jumped 19-fold, while net profit surged 14-fold, contributing to total revenue of 171.5 trillion won.

This growth was driven by the global artificial intelligence boom and robust demand for cutting-edge AI chips. The stellar performance of the semiconductor division helped the technology giant extend its streak of record earnings and offset weaker earnings in its mobile business.

The semiconductor arm saw massive growth, with operating profit rising more than 220 times its year-earlier level, and some reports indicating a more than 250-fold jump. This reflects the headway Samsung is making against rival SK Hynix, which also reported record earnings during the same period.

Analysts believe the boom is likely to continue as North American tech giants ramp up investment in AI data centers. Despite the current growth, Samsung warned that memory chip shortages could worsen next year as AI infrastructure continues to expand rapidly.
