Péter Magyar, Hungary’s prime minister-elect, expects a new government to be formed by mid-May following talks with President Tamás Sulyok. The timetable for the new parliament cannot begin until May 4th, when the election results are certified.

Magyar has vowed to suspend state media news coverage, calling it a “propaganda machine” and comparing recent media coverage to Nazi-era Germany. He aims to restore state media to a public service character.

The incoming leader stated his government will pass a new media law and establish a new media authority to ensure press freedom. He alleges state media outlets spread fear and lies to maintain the power of outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

Magyar believes every Hungarian deserves a public service media that broadcasts the truth, and intends to take state media’s news coverage off the air immediately upon forming his cabinet.
