A man and a woman have been charged after attempting to enter HM Naval Base Clyde in Scotland, home to Britain’s nuclear-armed submarines. Police Scotland detained the pair, a 34-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman, on Thursday afternoon after they asked to be admitted to the base.
The man is Iranian and the woman is Romanian. Both are expected to appear at Dumbarton Sheriff Court on Monday, though the specific charges have not yet been released. The base, also known as Faslane, houses the core of the U.K.’s submarine fleet, including vessels carrying nuclear weapons.
Police inquiries are ongoing following the incident at the highly sensitive military site, located about 40 miles northwest of Glasgow. The Royal Navy has confirmed the arrests but declined to comment further due to the ongoing investigation.
Britain has maintained a nuclear deterrent since the 1950s, currently consisting of four Royal Navy submarines armed with Trident missiles.
