President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he will ask the U.S. Supreme Court to rehear a case challenging birthright citizenship. The court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority including three Trump appointees, rejected his attempt to restrict birthright citizenship last month in a ruling authored by Chief Justice John Roberts.
The Republican president called the ruling a miscarriage of justice. In a post on Truth Social, Trump argued that American citizenship is not for sale and that the Supreme Court's ruling is wrong, stating that he would be asking for a rehearing immediately.
The effort to overturn the ruling follows an executive order Trump issued in 2025 ending birthright citizenship on his first day back in office. This order was part of a suite of policies designed to crack down on legal and illegal immigration.
Additionally, Trump has asked the Supreme Court to reconsider denying him an appeal of a verdict holding him liable for sexually abusing and defaming E. Jean Carroll.
