Indian activist Sonam Wangchuk ended his 26-day hunger strike on Friday following long negotiations on various conditions. Wangchuk stated that the decision to break his fast was made in view of possible violence in the country.
The strike originated from a scandal involving leaked medical entrance exam papers, which spiraled into a wider youth-led protest against Narendra Modi’s government. Demonstrators continue to demand wider reforms and the resignation of the education minister.
Wangchuk ended the hunger strike in Delhi in the presence of two federal ministers and at the urging of several members of parliament. Despite the end of the fast, student-led protests continue, with the movement urging demonstrations across the country on Friday over police brutality. Wangchuk promised to provide more details regarding the negotiations in a forthcoming video.
