Indian activist Sonam Wangchuk ended his 26-day hunger strike on Friday. The fast, which took place in Delhi, was broken in the presence of two federal ministers following long negotiations on various conditions and the urging of scores of members of parliament.
The hunger strike began over an exam paper scandal involving leaked medical entrance exams. This movement, known as the Cockroach protests, has spiraled into a wideranging youth-led movement and become one of the largest protests in India in recent years, posing a significant challenge to Narendra Modi's government.
Wangchuk stated that his decision to end the strike was made in view of possible violence in the country. He promised to lay out further details of the negotiations in a video soon.
Despite the end of the fast, student-led demonstrations continue across the country. Protesters are vowing to remain in the streets until the education minister resigns and wider reforms are implemented.
