Carlos Alcaraz is set to begin the defense of his US Open title. He will face Russia's Roman Safiullin in a match that serves as the first serious examination of his fitness following a long-term wrist injury.

Alcaraz has been sidelined since April, missing most of the clay season as well as the French Open, Wimbledon, and North American hard-court tournaments. Having missed the past two Grand Slam events, the Spaniard insists he is "feeling great" as he launches his bid to defend the title.

His opening opponent, Safiullin, comes into the match having made a strong run at Wimbledon while Alcaraz was sidelined with his injury.
