Johnny Somali, a 25-year-old American influencer, was sentenced to six months in prison by a South Korean court for disturbing the public. The conviction follows repeated acts of disrespect towards a monument commemorating Korean “comfort women,” a term used to describe women forced into sexual slavery during World War Two.
Somali gained notoriety after uploading videos online depicting him making obscene gestures and kissing the statue. In one instance, he was filmed twerking beside the memorial.
The former YouTuber’s actions sparked widespread outrage. He was convicted on multiple charges related to the desecration of the monument, which honors victims of wartime sexual slavery.
