Nvidia Corp. announced on Monday that it is investing $3.5 billion in the Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek Inc. This move marks the American company's largest ever direct investment outside the United States and has resulted in a surge in MediaTek's shares.

The investment was executed through the purchase of $3.5 billion in convertible bonds, which are debt instruments that the buyer can turn into shares at a later date. Nvidia regularly acquires stakes in partners as part of its technical collaborations.

The deal is intended to deepen collaboration between the two companies and widen Nvidia's financial ties across the AI industry. This strategy allows Nvidia to remain essential to AI infrastructure at a time when Big Tech firms are beginning to build their own AI chips.

Furthermore, the partnership supports Nvidia's goals of persuading more companies to build chips that plug into its dominant data center ecosystem.
