More than one million people took to the streets of Mexico City on Tuesday to celebrate the national team's victory over Ecuador. While the win advanced the team to the next round of the World Cup, the massive celebrations resulted in fatalities, casting a pall over the festive atmosphere.

Authorities reported that three people died from asphyxiation during the crush of jubilant crowds. The victims were identified as a 44-year-old man and two women, aged 19 and 48. Emergency crews were dispatched to the Juárez area of the capital after three people were reported to be unconscious.

In response to the tragedy, Mayor Clara Brugada urged citizens to always celebrate with responsibility, care, and empathy.
