The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda has infected nearly 2,000 people and killed over 700 since mid-May. However, the World Health Organization warns that the actual number of cases could be at least double, and possibly four times, the official tally, indicating that the disease is underreported.
The virus continues to spread within the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the country's public health institute reporting that the outbreak has reached two more northeastern provinces, Haut-Uele and Tshopo.
Aid workers have warned that the disease is outpacing the health response, and doctors at the outbreak's epicenter have threatened to go on strike. Despite these challenges, the UN health agency's emergencies director said he was encouraged to see a ramping up of the response.
