US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone call on Wednesday that lasted more than 90 minutes. Trump described the discussion as a very good conversation, noting that the leaders focused on the war in Ukraine and the situation regarding Iran and the Persian Gulf.
Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, President Putin proposed a temporary ceasefire and cessation of hostilities to mark the anniversary of the end of World War Two next month. While the Kremlin stated Putin is ready to declare a ceasefire for the Victory Day celebrations in May, President Trump encouraged the Russian leader to conclude the war.
The leaders also paid particular attention to Iran. President Putin put forward ideas on resolving the conflict over Iran's nuclear program and offered to help secure nuclear material, though President Trump rebuffed this offer. Putin expressed that Moscow views the prospect of a US ground operation in Iran as dangerous, while welcoming Trump's decision to extend a ceasefire in the region.
