Tunisia has sacked head coach Sabri Lamouchi following a 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening Group F fixture of the World Cup 2026 in Monterrey. Lamouchi, who was appointed in January on a contract running until 2028, became the first coaching casualty of the tournament after the dire performance.
Following the match, Lamouchi stated that his side had been punished for a string of costly mistakes. He warned that such errors could prove fatal for the team's chances at the World Cup.
The Tunisian football federation announced the dismissal on its Instagram account, noting that plans were underway to appoint Mondher Kebaier as the national team coach on an interim basis. However, an agreement has been reached to replace Lamouchi with fellow Frenchman Herve Renard. Renard is a two-time Africa Cup of Nations winner who previously coached Saudi Arabia at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, leading them to a victory over Argentina in the group stage.
Tunisia still has matches remaining in Group F, with upcoming fixtures against Japan this Saturday and the Netherlands on June 25.
