Alaska's top elections official ruled Monday that a Republican challenger with the same name as incumbent Senator Dan S Sullivan will not appear on the state's primary ballot. Daniel J Sullivan Jr, a former teacher, had filed to run as a Republican against the senator.
The elections chief stated that the bid was a determined effort and a deliberate attempt to confuse or mislead voters. These findings followed complaints filed by Republicans, who alleged that the candidate had coordinated with a Democratic campaign to confuse the electorate.
The disqualified candidate has 30 days to appeal the decision. Ballots for the August 18 primary election are scheduled to be printed on June 28.
