Germany and Syria are collaborating on the return of hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees, according to Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The Chancellor stated refugees have a role to play in rebuilding Syria.
The move comes as Syria’s interim President al-Sharaa visited Germany, marking a shift in policies regarding repatriation and regional stability. This visit is the first since al-Sharaa ousted Bashar al-Assad in late 2024.
During high-level meetings in Berlin, the President intends to focus on refugee repatriation and Syria’s rebuilding efforts. Both countries have expressed a desire for Syrians to return home, despite ongoing concerns regarding human rights.
The collaboration signals a new phase in relations, with both nations working towards enabling more Syrians to return to their country.
