North Korea's Kim stresses naval nuclear deterrent, orders new destroyer

defense & military

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un observed sea trials of a new warship that was repaired after a failed launch last year. During the inspection, Kim vowed to accelerate efforts to build a nuclear-armed navy and underscored the country's expanding military capabilities.

Kim stated that the navy must be developed into a force capable of taking charge of part of the country’s nuclear war deterrent plans. He emphasized that building a navy capable of delivering a "deadly blow" to enemies is a core goal of North Korea's current five-year defence plan.

These visits to military sites come ahead of an expected visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday and Tuesday.
