Novak Djokovic's latest bid to claim a record 25th Grand Slam title ended in the third round of the French Open on Friday. The 39-year-old world number four suffered a stunning defeat to Brazilian teenage sensation Joao Fonseca, marking his earliest exit from Roland Garros since 2009. The loss further opens the draw following the shock exit of world number one Jannik Sinner.
In a five-set epic lasting four hours and 53 minutes, Fonseca fought back from two sets down to win 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5. This match entered the records as the longest Djokovic has ever played at the French Open. Fonseca, reflecting on the monumental win, stated that he tried to hit the ball as fast as possible because Djokovic does not miss.
Following the match, the three-time French Open champion expressed uncertainty about returning to the red clay of Roland Garros next year. Djokovic, who has been injured for three months, noted that while he played good tennis, he felt exhausted toward the end of the match, stating there were times he felt as though he was barely standing on his legs. If he chooses to return, he would join a short list of players to feature in the French Open at age 40, a feat achieved by few in the Open Era.
