US Vice President JD Vance is in Pakistan to lead negotiations with Iranian officials in a bid to solidify a fragile ceasefire. The talks, beginning Saturday in Islamabad, were tasked to Vance by Donald Trump to address Iran’s threats to break the truce following Israeli strikes on Lebanon.
Several sources indicate Iranian leaders have expressed a desire for Vance to take a lead role in ending the war. Vance stated he received “pretty clear guidelines” from Trump and anticipates productive discussions if Iran doesn’t attempt to exploit the US.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has authorized direct negotiations with Lebanon, expected to take place in Washington next week. UK Prime Minister Starmer has classified the current ceasefire as “fragile.” Vance described himself as “looking forward to negotiations” as he enters this high-profile role.
The Vice President, who previously opposed the start of the war, will lead the US delegation in the talks.
