President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that the United States will begin an effort on Monday morning, Middle Eastern Time, to free ships stranded in the Strait of Hormuz. The operation will involve guiding some neutral ships trapped in the Persian Gulf out through the strait.
Vessels have been largely unable to pass through the Strait of Hormuz for months, which Iran has effectively closed. This situation has disrupted key supply chains and left various crews stranded for weeks.
Trump described the operation as a humanitarian gesture for nations that have done absolutely nothing wrong. While he offered few details regarding the project, he stated that any interference with the operation will have to be dealt with forcefully.
