Australia and Canada sign $1.8 billion Arctic over-the-horizon radar deal

international relations defense & military

Australia has signed its first international sale of an advanced long-range radar system to Canada. The export agreement, valued between $1.75 billion and A$2.5 billion ($1.8 billion), will see the Australian-designed system built in Canada.

The sophisticated Over the Horizon Radar system has been refined by Australia for decades. This technology functions by bouncing signals off the ionosphere, enabling the radar to see thousands of kilometres past the curve of the Earth.

Canada is acquiring the system to monitor the increasingly contested Arctic. By offering long-range surveillance to improve defences and provide early warning, the technology is intended to strengthen Canada's military presence in the region.
