Republican Representative Mike Collins has defeated former college football coach Derek Dooley in a primary runoff election to lead the party’s bid for the US Senate in Georgia. Collins will now face incumbent Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff in November's midterm elections.
The Collins-Ossoff matchup is projected to be one of the most competitive races this year and will be closely watched nationally as the major political parties vie for control of the US Senate.
In Georgia’s gubernatorial primary runoff, billionaire healthcare executive Rick Jackson was selected over Trump-backed lieutenant governor Burt Jones to face Democratic candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms in November. This follows a bruising election campaign that led to libel litigation and federal challenges to Georgia election law.
Collins has raised US$4.9 million through May 27 and has US$1.2 million on hand.
