China has detained two Japanese nationals on suspicion of smuggling prohibited goods.
The individuals were detained in May in the northeastern Chinese city of Dalian, according to the Japanese government. Media reports suggest that the smuggled items were strategic rare-earth-related products and that one of the arrested individuals is an employee of a major Japanese electronics firm.
These arrests occur amid ongoing diplomatic tensions between China and Japan.
