Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez alleged that Russia and Israel spread disinformation regarding Spain's migration policy, triggering an unprecedented surge of migrants into the Spanish exclave of Ceuta. Between July 30 and 31, over 72,000 people irregularly crossed from Morocco into the territory.
The centre-left Prime Minister stated that the smear campaign was driven by dissatisfaction with Madrid's position on the wars in Ukraine and Gaza. Sanchez maintained that the disinformation was also magnified by far-right networks.
While Sanchez said there were signs of involvement from Russia and Israel, he noted there was no evidence of Moroccan involvement. Both Russia and Israel have denied the allegations.
