Post-Gazette Sold to Baltimore Banner’s Nonprofit Publisher

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette will remain open after being acquired by the Venetoulis Institute for Local Journalism, parent company of the Baltimore Banner. The purchase comes less than a month before the 240-year-old newspaper was scheduled to close.

The Post-Gazette, dating back to 1786, faced closure after disputes between its parent company and its union. Its potential shutdown would have left Pittsburgh as the largest U.S. city without a local newspaper.

The new owners will continue printing the paper twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays, and maintain a website for the remaining days. Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed.

The Venetoulis Institute’s acquisition prevents a major loss for local news in Pittsburgh and ensures the continuation of a newspaper with deep historical roots.
