Burkina Faso's military junta announced on Friday that it is severing diplomatic ties with France. The decision was broadcast on national television, where communications minister Gilbert Ouedraogo stated that the move follows France's alleged failure to abide by principles of mutual respect and non-interference.
The ruling authorities accused the former colonial power of acting against Burkina Faso's interests and harboring neo-colonial ambitions. Further allegations included France's supposed backing of subversive networks and militants in the Sahel, as well as continued foreign interference regarding security and sovereignty.
This rupture deepens the break with Western allies since Captain Ibrahim Traore seized power in a 2022 coup. In response to the announcement, France described the decision as hostile and baseless.
