Kimberly Guilfoyle has resigned as the U.S. ambassador to Greece after the White House asked for her resignation on Tuesday. The former Fox News personality and top Trump campaign surrogate departs her post amid allegations of improper, unethical, and possibly illegal conduct before and during her tenure in Athens.
The resignation follows reports that Guilfoyle sought payment from a Trump donor in exchange for access to administration officials. Specifically, it is alleged that she asked a political donor for $100,000 to pay her personal American Express bill. Other allegations include accepting lavish hospitality and improper gifts from wealthy Greek businessmen, threatening a host country official, and offering to use her influence inside the administration.
President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly grew furious over the allegations. Trump previously stated that he was unhappy with the situation and that his administration had been looking at firing Guilfoyle. White House press secretary Katie Zacharia confirmed the request for resignation during her debut briefing, adding that the administration wishes her well.
Guilfoyle has denied the allegations that she offered access to Trump administration officials in exchange for money. While resigning from her position, she insisted that she will vigorously defend herself.
