Twelve people died and at least ten others were injured after a bus carrying Polish tourists and pilgrims overturned on the M3 motorway in eastern Hungary. The crash occurred early Sunday morning near the town of Mezőkeresztes.
Local police reported that the vehicle went off a straight section of the road and into a ditch at approximately 1 a.m. local time. The bus was traveling back from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar confirmed the casualties in a Facebook post on Sunday morning.
By 3 a.m., disaster management services reported that firefighters had rescued 35 people from the coach, though several passengers had been trapped beneath the vehicle. The driver survived the crash and has been arrested. Early reports suggest the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
