Deadlocked Lindsay Clancy jury resumes deliberations as risk of mistrial grows

crime & law legal proceedings

Jury deliberations in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial resumed for a fifth day on Wednesday in Massachusetts. A former labor and delivery nurse, 36-year-old Clancy is accused of strangling her three young children at the family home in 2023. While Clancy does not deny the acts, she has pleaded not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility, claiming that postpartum psychosis led to her actions. Prosecutors argue that she knew what she was doing.

For a second time, jurors have informed the judge that they are unable to reach a unanimous verdict regarding whether Clancy is criminally responsible. The jury had previously issued a deadlock note on Tuesday, the fourth day of deliberations. Despite this, the judge told the jurors on Wednesday to keep trying to reach a decision.

Before deliberations resumed, the judge questioned jurors one by one following the arrest of a woman accused of filming them as they left the courthouse the previous day. If the jury ultimately cannot agree on a verdict, the judge could declare a mistrial.
