The Asian Football Confederation has joined UEFA and CONCACAF in opposing FIFA President Gianni Infantino's plan to sell stakes in the World Cup and other competitions to private investors. This alignment has created a sense of global mutiny, as the AFC stands in solidarity with the regional bodies in Europe and North America.
The AFC expressed deep concern over the proposed establishment of FIFA Forward Enterprise, a US$20 billion commercial subsidiary designed to run the World Cup and other FIFA events.
AFC president Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al-Khalifa described FIFA's lack of consultation over the plan as totally unacceptable. He stated that the move undermines the sport's existing continental structure. Although the AFC is opposed to the proposal, it stopped short of threatening to boycott events run by the global soccer governing body.
