The Democratic Republic of Congo is facing its 17th Ebola epidemic, driven by the Bundibugyo virus. This rare viral disease has infected almost 1,600 people across Congo and neighboring Uganda, resulting in more than 500 deaths in the DRC.
Because there are currently no existing vaccines or approved treatment options for this strain, a World Health Organization-sponsored clinical trial has been launched. The study is testing an antiviral called remdesivir and a monoclonal antibody cocktail known as MBP134, both administered alongside optimized supportive care.
Patients have already begun receiving these experimental treatments as researchers aim to improve care for the disease. Residents within the outbreak zone in Congo have expressed hope as the study of these two potential treatments gets underway.
