A war-damaged building in Gaza collapsed overnight, killing at least 21 people, including at least eight children. The structure, which had been damaged months ago by an Israeli strike, housed six displaced families and collapsed onto nearby residents and tents.
Rescue crews worked through Thursday to search the rubble as cries for help echoed from beneath the debris. While 45 people were rescued, dozens more remain missing. These efforts come as rescuers continue to try to unearth hundreds of bodies from buildings hit earlier in Israel's campaign of destruction.
The Israeli military stated it did not strike the building, though it did not clarify if strikes on nearby targets could have caused the damage. The collapse underscores how perilous and desperate living conditions have grown for the majority of the enclave's population.
