The Trump administration will allow core members of an Iranian delegation to travel to the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week. This approval includes Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who is scheduled to address the annual gathering of world leaders on Wednesday.

A State Department spokesperson said Thursday that the delegation will be smaller than last year. The approved officials will face travel restrictions and prohibitions on the purchase of luxury goods.

The decision comes as the US and Iran remain at war in the Middle East. The State Department had previously extended visa sanctions on officials who they said acted to internationalise the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
