Weinstein's New York charges dropped; California conviction upheld, resentencing

crime & law legal proceedings

Harvey Weinstein's 2022 rape and sexual assault conviction in California has been upheld by a three-judge appeals court panel. While the conviction stands, the court unanimously ordered that the trial judge, who originally sentenced the former movie executive to 16 years in prison, must now resentence him.

The ruling comes a day after prosecutors in New York decided that Weinstein would not face a fourth trial. That case involved allegations from actress Jessica Mann, who accused Weinstein of raping her in a New York hotel room in March 2013. Prosecutors dropped the #MeToo-era case after the accuser said she could not bear to testify again.

Once a powerful producer who ruled Hollywood with the ability to make or break projects and careers, Weinstein's allegations sparked the #MeToo movement. He remains behind bars at Rikers Island, a maximum-security prison in New York, as he still stands convicted of another sexual felony in New York and others in California.
