UN starts evacuating 11,000 stranded seafarers from Strait of Hormuz

humanitarian crisis

The International Maritime Organization and a U.N. agency have launched a large-scale evacuation plan to move more than 11,000 stranded seafarers out of the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz.

The vital waterway had been effectively closed off by Tehran following the start of the US-Israel war on Iran on February 28. This led to months of conflict that left hundreds of vessels idled.

The operation follows a peace agreement between the United States and Iran, which has ended the conflict and allowed commercial shipping to resume through one of the world's most important maritime routes.

Working with multiple countries, the International Maritime Organization stated it has received safety guarantees to ensure that vessels can now sail safely through the Strait of Hormuz.
