President Vladimir Putin recently visited the Kuril Islands, a Pacific archipelago controlled by Moscow but claimed by Japan. These islands, referred to as the Northern Territories in Japan, include an island off the east coast of Hokkaido, one of four currently held by Russia.
The visit sparked immediate diplomatic tension. Japan summoned Russia's ambassador to protest the trip, while Russia's Foreign Ministry summoned the Japanese ambassador to protest Tokyo's criticism of the visit. Russia also summoned Japan's ambassador to Moscow over anti-Russian remarks made by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
Analysts suggest that the visit by Russia's leader sent a message to Japan, which has sought to reclaim control of the disputed territory for decades.
