Political organizer Denise Powell has won the Democratic nomination for Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District. Powell defeated State Sen. John Cavanaugh in a close primary race, pulling ahead Tuesday night.

The newcomer secured nearly 39% of the vote in her bid to represent the state’s lone blue-leaning enclave, which is a factor in presidential races. The primary was held to replace GOP Rep. Don Bacon.

The victory emerges from a tough primary fight in one of the party’s top opportunities to flip a swing seat this year. The state's electoral system was a key issue throughout the 2nd Congressional District primary.
