The International Olympic Committee announced a new eligibility policy for female athletes, effective at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. Only biological female athletes will be eligible to compete in women’s events.

The policy will utilize a one-time gene-screening test to determine gender. This decision, led by the IOC’s first female leader Kirsty Coventry, aims to ensure fairness, safety and integrity in women’s competitions.

The new rules effectively exclude transgender women athletes from the Olympics. The policy aligns with recent discussions surrounding women’s sports and eligibility criteria.

The IOC stated the policy will be implemented starting with the Los Angeles Games in July 2028 and will apply to all subsequent Olympic Games.
