The U.S.-brokered ceasefire in Gaza is currently stalled, according to Nickolay Mladenov, the top diplomat overseeing the truce. While a U.S.-backed envoy stated that the ceasefire is holding, he noted that there are very serious daily violations.
The primary obstruction to the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the war-ravaged territory is the deadlock over the disarmament of Hamas. Mladenov has attempted to convince the militant group to give up its arms, but Hamas has so far refused amid Israeli ceasefire violations.
To resolve this impasse, President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace for Gaza is preparing a 15-point plan for the disarmament of Hamas. Mladenov clarified that the peace process is not asking Hamas to disappear as a political movement and urged the group to engage with the next stages of the process.
