Arizona voters chose their nominees for governor, Congress, and other top offices on Tuesday, setting the stage for a high-stakes midterm battle in the battleground state. These primaries established the field for what are expected to be heated contests this fall as Republicans seek to reverse some of the Trump-era losses they suffered in the swing state.
Representative Andy Biggs, a conservative hard-liner and staunch ally of President Donald Trump, won the Republican nomination for governor. Biggs, a former chair of the House Freedom Caucus who voted to overturn the 2020 election results, defeated fellow Representative David Schweikert by appealing to the party's deeply conservative base.
The victory sets up a November showdown between Biggs and the Democratic incumbent, Governor Katie Hobbs. This race is considered one of the most closely watched gubernatorial contests.
Other primary contests focused on congressional seats, where Democrats chose candidates to try to flip Republican-held House seats. Among the Democratic results, a left-wing challenger failed to unseat Representative Greg Stanton.
