President Donald Trump is expected to address the White House Correspondents’ Association at a rescheduled dinner this Friday night. The event takes place nearly three months after the original gathering on April 25 was abruptly halted.
The previous dinner at the Washington Hilton hotel was upended after an armed assailant tried to force his way through a security checkpoint. The man fired a shotgun outside the ballroom and charged past Secret Service agents in an alleged attempt to assassinate the president.
The rescheduled dinner will be held at the Waldorf Astoria hotel under heightened security. The event will take place in a different, smaller and more secure venue. Melanie Trump and JD Vance are expected to be absent.
Press freedom groups and retired journalists have condemned the rearranged dinner as hypocritical. These groups are urging attendees to use the event to confront President Trump over his administration’s intensified attacks on the media.
