Turkey cracks down on LGBTQ+ and HIV support groups, blocking online accounts

crime & law

Turkish authorities have launched a sweeping operation targeting LGBTQ+ associations, businesses, and individuals. The crackdown, which began early Sunday morning, involved raids on popular hangouts and gay bars, as well as breaking into association offices.

At least 162 people have been arrested during the weekend crackdown. In one series of raids, authorities detained 26 people and searched the offices of six LGBTQ+ associations. Additionally, a court has ordered the blocking of dozens of LGBTQ+-linked websites and social-media accounts.

Prosecutors and Ankara claim the operations are based on allegations of prostitution and obscene content, stating that raids on venues are aimed at protecting family values. This occurs as the Turkish government has been increasingly accused of targeting the LGBTQ+ community in recent years.
